Expansion joints, also called flex joints, movements joints or compensators are assemblies  designed to safely absorb the heat-induced expansion and contraction of various construction materials, to absorb vibration, to hold certain parts together, or to allow movement due to ground settlement or noise. The basic materials are  rubber, metal and polymer (PTFE) materials. They are commonly found between sections of piping systems in various industries.
